She seemed to gape for words when the general appeared behind her in the doorway, smirking.

Gen: Good training tonight, Cadet. Ah, Albar - here for some extra tuition?

The young cadet looked down at the floor, ashamed. Looming behind her, the general took a sauntering step towards Zinnia, pushing the other girl out of the way, already forgotten. No noise came from anywhere around them, though the captain's bunks were behind the door almost next to Zinnia.

Gen: Don't be shy, Albar.

Another step and he was over her, against her, above her, all around her.

Gen: I've never had a mongrel before.

Z: I... please... I was just going to go back... to bed!

Zinnia stuttered, cringing as she felt his hot breath on her face, stinging from his insult. Her heart was beating double time in her chest, and she tried to wiggle away.

His wrinkled, strong hands gripped her forearms, pinning her where she stood.

Gen: Be spontaneous.

He purred in a voice riddled with perversity. The other girl scurried away, pleased for the distraction, leaving Zinnia alone. On the other side of the wall, Arum slept uneasily in his bed, oblivious.

Z: No...No...

Her mouth was dry, palms sweaty. She struggled hopelessly in his grip, fear running through her. What was going to happen to her? Who would save her? Maybe... Maybe nobody would.

Z: No!

She was louder now.

G: Come on, sweetheart.

Suddenly his dry old lips were on her temple, hands moving to secure her wrist. But behind the wall, someone was stirring. Though his bed was furthest from the door, Arum stirred first at Zinnia's whimpers, sensing the danger, it seemed. When she cried louder, he jolted awake, knowing the cry needed him. Stumbling to the door, he pressed his ear against it.

She tried again, angling her head away from his mouth. She felt her stomach churn with fear now, she was on her own.

That was enough for Arum: in less than two seconds he was through the door with the attacker pinned to the opposite wall. Only when they were face to face did he recognise the general, who was shocked and seething with anger.

Gen: Just what do you think you're doing, Captain Maglor?

A: Sir, I-I heard someone crying for help, and-

Now he turned, and his jaw dropped as he saw Zinnia. The general cleared his throat and had the grace to look embarrassed.

Gen: Yes um, feisty little thing, isn't she? Don't mind if I borrow her, do you?

Arum gaped and looked to Zinnia.

Zinnia's brown eyes were wide, and she took the opportunity to struggle some more.

He said the general wouldn't touch me. He promised.

Her mind raced.

A: I- sir, with all due respect, I'd rather you didn't.

It was unheard of to refuse the general anything, and it made Arum cringe to see his superior bristle.

Gen: As you wish, Captain.

As the general strode away, Arum felt that he may have just got stuck with night patrols for the next few weeks. When he saw Zinnia, he realised that didn't matter.

A: I-I'm sorry, I didn't think he'd...

Zinnia let out a long, shaky breath, and sunk to the floor, clearly very upset.

Arum looked absolutely ridiculous standing there in military position, yet wearing pyjamas. He was stiff and awkward.

A: He's never... done that before.

Eventually he crouched, facing her, trying to show how sorry he was in his face, so used to being expressionless.

A: How was I to know he'd...

Still the guilt gnawed at him.

Zinnia's sentence crumbled into sobs. Her heart was still facing, and her body felt tainted where he had touched it.

Arum could feel something lurch inside him, whether his stomach or his heart or something he neither knew nor cared. It was a long time since he'd seen someone sob like that, and the memories it brought back were less than pleasant: his father wretching with sobs when hearing of his brother's death, his mother crying herself to sleep after one of her husband's smacks. He shuddered and tried to block out the thoughts. Gently, as if approaching a bird or a butterfly, he touched her arm with his fingertips, desperate to make her tears stop.

A: I'm sorry. He won't come near you again, I'll make sure this time - I'll keep you near me.

Zinnias breathing was erratic and her face was wet with tears. She had been insulted, traded and even lashed out at before, but never had she feared... Never had she even imagined such treatment from a man who was supposed to be a professional.

Z: He was going to....

He said again, not know what else would bring her comfort. Tentatively, he reached to touch her arm.

Zinnia let him, but made no indication that she noticed him touching her. She simply hung her head, breathing interrupted by hiccuping sobs.

Arum wracked his brains to think of what he could do to help her tonight. Offering her his bed so the general couldn't find her would mean little in a room full of other captains, used to the luxuries of the general. What, then? An idea crept up on him.

A: I know a place you could sleep. I could sleep there, too, keep you safe, if you wanted.
